Breaks are important as a contrast-creating musical effect, and they often occur in modern rhythmic music. Probably the most typical break is to strike a chord on the first beat of a bar and then wait until the next bar to continue playing. The chord on the actual break can be either a short or a long one. In a break the beat continues, in contrast to a fermatawhere the beat stops.
Listen to 'The Saints', where there are breaks in the end and in the beginning of the verse.
